Gluten-free

Is hard cider gluten-free?

Yes. Real hard cider is naturally gluten-free. It's made by fermenting apple juice, not brewing grains — so there's no wheat, barley, or rye in the process. Dickens Cider is certified gluten-free, and both of our flagship ciders are safe for anyone avoiding gluten, including people with celiac disease.

Why cider is naturally gluten-free

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. Hard cider is fermented from 100% apple juice. No grains are involved. That means the finished product contains zero gluten unless a cidery deliberately adds it (which Dickens Cider never does).

The main risk for gluten in cider comes from shared equipment at facilities that also process beer. Dickens Cider is made in a dedicated cider facility, so there's no cross-contamination.

Cider vs. beer: the gluten difference

Beer is brewed from malted barley and often wheat or rye. Those grains contain gluten by definition. Even "gluten-reduced" beers can trigger reactions in sensitive drinkers because the gluten protein is broken down, not removed.

Cider is the opposite: it starts as fruit and ends as fruit. If you're gluten-sensitive or celiac, switching from beer to cider is one of the safest moves you can make.

Dickens Cider: certified gluten-free, organic, and dry

Both The Dry and The Ultra Dry are certified gluten-free. They're also USDA Organic, made from 100% USA-grown apples, and fermented bone-dry with no added sugar or juice top-up.
